Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that AI answer engines — ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Claude — cite your business when answering questions relevant to what you offer. It's distinct from SEO (which targets human readers navigating search results) and requires a different approach to content structure, depth, and technical implementation.

Why AEO matters more every month

AI search traffic is growing at 40% year-over-year while traditional organic click-through rates decline as AI Overviews absorb more of the first page. Businesses that build AEO authority now are compounding an advantage that will be significantly harder to build in 12 months when every competitor is focused on it.

The AEO content framework

Technical AEO: the schema foundation

FAQPage schema is the single highest-ROI schema type for AEO. It creates a direct pipeline from your Q&A content into AI knowledge bases. Every service page should have 5–8 FAQ items with schema markup. Every 'how-to' piece of content should have HowTo schema. Every local business page needs LocalBusiness schema with complete attributes.

Building AEO authority over time

AEO authority compounds. The more often your content is cited in AI answers, the more those engines trust your domain. The more your domain is trusted, the more queries you get cited for. Getting cited early — even for low-volume queries — starts the compounding effect. We prioritize AEO for new clients specifically on the queries where local competition is weakest, to build early citation signals.

Measuring AEO performance

There's no unified AEO dashboard yet. We measure via: weekly manual checks of top queries in ChatGPT and Perplexity, Google Search Console for AI Overview appearance data, and brand mention monitoring to catch citations across AI platforms. Build a 20-query test set that covers your most important client questions and check it weekly.

AEO isn't a replacement for SEO. It's the layer above it. Build both, because the businesses that win AI search in 2027 are the ones who started in 2026.
