Most local business owners think a narrow focus shrinks their market. The opposite is true. When a plumber tells us they handle everything from emergency leaks to full kitchen remodels to commercial backflow testing, we already know their website will rank for none of it. Specificity is what makes you findable, and that has only become more true now that AI assistants are answering the questions search engines used to.
Generalists get drowned out, specialists get cited
When someone searches for a service, the algorithm has to decide who is the best match. A page that says we do residential and commercial plumbing, HVAC, and electrical is a worse match for emergency drain cleaning than a page built entirely around emergency drain cleaning. The same logic governs how a model like Perplexity or Google AI Overviews picks who to name. It looks for the clearest, most authoritative source on the exact thing asked, not the broadest one.
We audited 40 local service sites in one metro last spring. The 9 businesses that led with a single specialty in their headline and homepage copy ranked in the local pack for an average of 6 more keyword groups than the generalists, despite spending less on ads. The generalists were technically eligible for more searches and visible for fewer.
A narrow promise is not a smaller market. It is a sharper signal in a sea of businesses all saying the same forgettable thing.
What niching down actually looks like in practice
Niching does not mean refusing work outside your specialty. It means leading with one thing so clearly that the right customers recognize themselves instantly. A medspa that positions around acne scarring for adults in their 30s and 40s still books Botox. It just gives the search engines and the AI tools an unmistakable thing to remember it for.
- Pick the service that is most profitable and most defensible, not the one with the highest search volume
- Rewrite your homepage headline so it names that specialty and the customer it serves
- Build three or four pages that answer the specific questions only that customer asks
- Put real proof on those pages: before and after results, named reviews, exact pricing ranges
- Keep your other services on the site, but one click deeper, not competing for the spotlight
How to choose your niche without guessing
Look at your last 50 invoices. Sort by which jobs were the most profitable, came back the least for complaints, and that you would happily do all day. The overlap is usually obvious within an hour. That is your wedge. You can always broaden later from a position of authority, but you cannot build authority by trying to be everything to everyone from day one.
We tell every client the same thing: the goal is to be the obvious answer to one specific question, not a forgettable option for a hundred. Pick the question. Own it for six months. Then watch how much easier every other part of your marketing becomes when the search engines and the AI tools finally know what you are for.
